Highly acclaimed cinema- pioneer- Dadasaheb Phalke ( real name Dhundiraj Govind Phalke) is rightly called the ‘Father of Indian cinema'. The highest film award is instituted in his fond memory by the Government of India and is awarded annually by the President of India, to only one veteran film personality recipient for "outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema"
It seems rather surprising that no one in Hindi cinema has yet told us the detailed story of the birth of Indian cinema, highlighting the diligent efforts and brilliant talents of visionary genius film-maker Dadasaheb Phalke His bio-pic story is something that the nation needs to watch on the screen and appreciate the inspiring content of his success-story. Which he achieved despite so many initial setbacks and adversities.
A Biopic is being planned on the legendary Father of Indian Cinema Dadasaheb Phalke by mega-star Aamir Khan and acclaimed film-maker Rajkumar Hirani .Set against the backdrop of independence struggle, the story unfolds an extraordinary journey of an adamant creative genius artiste, who from scratch, against all odds, goes on to give birth to the largest indigenous film industry in the world.
Filming is slated to begin from October 2025. Aamir Khan will start preparing for his part soon after the release of Sitaare Zameen Par by end of June 2025. VFX studios from LA has already created AI designs for the era and period of the film.
Rajkumar Hirani with Abhijat Joshi and two other writers Hindukush Bharadwaj and Avishkar Bharadwaj have been working on this script for the last 4 years.
Dadasaheb Phalke’s grandson, Chandrashekhar Srikrishna Pusalkar has been supportive of the project and has provided major anecdotes and incidents from Dadasaheb Phalke’s life.
Moreover, coming from the director-actor duo who gave us cult classics and biggest successes of all time like '3 Idiots' and 'PK', Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan, and candid bio-pic on Sanjay Dutt titled 'Sanju' this film is poised to set a distinct benchmark in the Indian entertainment industry.
Interestingly, in the past, a 96-minute Marathi regional movie on Dadasaheb Phalke titled Harishchandrachi Factory (2009) starring actor Nandu Madhav as Dhundiraj Phalke directed by Paresh Mokashi was co-produced by Ronni Screwvala. In September 2009, this Marathi biopic with English sub-titles was India's official entry to Oscar Academy Awards in the Foreign Language Film category. This bio-pic film depicts the series of struggles faced by Phalke-saab during the making of India's first full-length feature film titled 'Raja Harishchanda (1913) which was released in theatres on May 3rd 2013.
